Religious Headwear in Passport Photos: The Rules
Emma White
Editor in Chief
Most countries protect your right to wear religious headwear in ID photos, but security requirements for facial recognition still stand.
The Hairline Rule
Typically, the rule is "hairline to chin". However, if your headwear covers your hairline, that is acceptable for religious reasons. The critical boundary is the face visible from the bottom of the chin to the top of the forehead.
No Shadows
Your head covering must not cast a shadow on your face. Ensure the lighting goes deep enough into the face opening.
Statement Letter
In the US, you must submit a signed statement that the head covering is part of recognized, traditional religious attire that is customarily or required to be worn continuously in public.
