What to Wear for a Passport Photo: The Dos and Don'ts

Your passport photo will last 5-10 years. Dress appropriately.

Best Colors (Thinking Like a Camera)

Background removal algorithms look for "contrast edges." If you wear white against a white wall, the edge detection fails, and half your shoulder might be deleted. Wear high-contrast colors:

  • Black/Navy/Charcoal: The safest bets. They create a "hard edge" against the background.
  • Deep Red / Emerald Green: Excellent for color photos, as they contrast with both the background and most skin tones.
  • Matte Fabrics: Cotton or wool absorbs light. Silk or satin reflects flash, creating "hot spots" (white flares) on your chest that can trigger quality alerts.

Strictly Forbidden Items

  • Camouflage: The US State Department specifically lists "camouflage attire" as a rejection reason. This extends to "camo-style" fashion prints.
  • Uniforms: Military, flight crew, or work uniforms are banned to prevent "impersonation" or "official status" confusion in travel documents.
  • Large Branding: Avoid shirts with giant logos or text. They can distract from the face and are technically "non-plain attire" in strict jurisdictions.
  • Strapless Tops: If the crop cuts off your shoulders, a strapless top makes you look naked in the photo. This can cause issues at conservative border crossings. Wear a crew neck or collar.
